A shared space allows cyclists to choose a path with the most distance between them and pedestrians, regardless of which side the pedestrans are walking.

When the route is segregated cyclists cannot (by law) cross the white line.

This results in conflict and confusion where pedestrians who are walking on the cycle side (especially those with dogs on stretchy leads, or dogs without leads) do not realise that cyclists may not just ride around them.
